In the last 3 years, HOP has become increasingly committed to the
Kilimanjaro Children’s Orphanage in Moshi Tanzania. What began as donations of health and hygiene
supplies to this orphanage, run by Mama Lucie, has grown to a long-term
commitment to help the more than 150 children living there. This past year, HOP supported the purchase of
2 Heifer cows, each of which produces 15 - 20 liters of milk daily. HOP
volunteers – in collaboration with the older kids at the orphanage, retrieved
and transported the cows, built a fenced-in stable, had both cows inseminated, and
established a fund to support monthly delivery of feed and staff to provide
daily care for the cows. That being said, with 2 to 3 kids per bunk, inadequate
facilities for cooking and housing staff, chronic shortages of food, and
insufficient land with no irrigation, these children have many more needs. This
year, HOP has funded the purchase of 3 acres of land to provide a stable future
site for an expanded orphanage with sustainable housing for the boys and girls,
stables and corrals for cows and chickens, plots of irrigated land for growing
food, and dedicated indoor and outdoor space for playing and learning. Click here for more about Tanzania.
